Introduction: A Culinary Cultural Treasure

The Poznań Croissant, known locally as the St. Martin Croissant, is more than just a pastry; it has become a beloved confection and a symbol of generosity and community spirit in Poland’s vibrant city of Poznań. Each year, as the city celebrates the traditional St. Martin’s Day, locals indulge in these delightful treats, consuming over a million of them in just one day during the festivities.

Rich History and Tradition

The origins of the St. Martin Croissant trace back to a legendary baker who wished to honor St. Martin’s spirit of charity. According to the tale, this baker crafted a pastry filled with rich ingredients to distribute to the needy. Over time, this creation evolved into the cherished St. Martin Croissant, which is now a distinct specialty of Poznań.

The production of these croissants is strictly regulated. In 2008, they received recognition as a geographical indication product under EU law, meaning that only bakeries certified by the Poznań authorities can produce and sell them under this official name. This assures that each croissant adheres to rigorous standards of quality. As of this year, only about 80 bakeries in Poznań have received this esteemed certification.

An Intricate Craftsmanship

The Art of Creation

Crafting a St. Martin Croissant is a meticulous process, often taking six hours or more. The most time-consuming part involves kneading the dough, which must undergo multiple cycles of mixing and resting. Each round of kneading incorporates butter, requiring the dough to be folded carefully, ensuring a rich and flaky texture. During the resting phase, the dough is wrapped in cling film and left to chill in the refrigerator for approximately half an hour, allowing for a perfect rise.

While waiting, bakers prepare the filling, grinding ingredients like lemon and orange zest, and gently sautéing them in butter. Once ready, the rested dough is rolled out into thin sheets, cut into triangles, and the filling spread generously before being rolled into the signature croissant shape.

The Baker’s Touch

As the bakers work, they embody artistry in their craft. The rolling of the dough requires patience and precision, as they deftly control the rolling pin with an attentive touch. During the rolling process, bakers skillfully encase the hearty filling within the dough, ensuring that the final product not only looks appealing but is also bursting with flavor.

After shaping, a glaze of sugar is brushed over the surface before a sprinkle of crushed almonds is added, preparing the croissants for baking. The oven temperature and timing are critical—only through exacting control can these pastries emerge golden and flaky on the outside, yet tender and moist on the inside.

A Celebration of Flavor and Community

The St. Martin’s Festival

When the freshly baked St. Martin Croissants are held aloft, their weightiness resonates with a sense of quality. The crust, kissed by the sun, glistens invitingly. A single bite reveals a crisp outer layer, followed by a tender interior filled with sweet, aromatic goodness that delights the palate and lingers in memory.

Every year during the St. Martin’s Festival, Poznań comes alive with a grand parade honoring St. Martin. Crowds gather in joyous anticipation, following the actor on a white horse who plays St. Martin. As onlookers walk beside him, they revel in the spirit of the celebration, eventually converging in a square where the air is filled with laughter and shared joys.

Throughout the parade, the St. Martin Croissant takes center stage. Locals proudly carry these freshly baked pastries, their faces glowing with happiness. Following the procession, festival-goers converge in the square and its surroundings, together savoring the taste of the St. Martin Croissants, sharing in the festive spirit.

The Croissant Today

Historically, Poznań residents enjoyed St. Martin Croissants only during the festival, but today these pastries have become an emblem of the city, eagerly sought after by visitors as a delightful souvenir. The city has even established a dedicated museum celebrating the St. Martin Croissant, offering tourists a chance to engage in the unique experience of making these treats themselves.

Conclusion: A Symbol of Generosity

In essence, the Poznań Croissant is not just a pastry; it embodies the community spirit, rich traditions, and culinary artistry of Poznań. Through every flaky layer and every indulgent bite, it tells a story of generosity and joy, making it an unforgettable part of the city’s charm.

Introduction: A Celebration of Culture and Speed
In the cooler embrace of winter, the desert transforms into a vibrant arena for camel racing, a beloved tradition across the Arab world. This exhilarating sport transcends mere competition, embodying the rich tapestry of Arab history and culture. Recent reports from Egypt and other Gulf nations reveal a burgeoning number of events, inviting audiences to witness the incredible speed and agility of camels galloping through the sands, harmonizing the rhythms of nature and humanity.

A Glorious Dawn in Ismailia
As the first rays of the sun break through the night, the vast desert landscape is painted in hues of golden brown. In the eastern Egyptian city of Ismailia, a racetrack emerges amidst the undulating dunes, marked by colorful flags fluttering in the gentle breeze. The sandy path stretches for miles, framed by powerful 4WD vehicles parked close to the track. Crews set up cameras atop these vehicles, prepared to capture the sweeping motion of the camels as they race.

The spectators, a blend of local enthusiasts and curious travelers, gather around, laying colorful blankets on the ground. They clutch steaming cups of traditional red tea, eagerly engaging in spirited discussions about their favorite competitors, setting the stage for the thrilling spectacle to come.

The Elegant Competitors: Camels in Their Glory
As the camels make their grand entrance, spectators can’t help but marvel at their majestic forms—long legs, graceful necks, and a poised demeanor. Each camel is a masterpiece of grooming, adorned with vibrant fabrics and jingling bells that dance with every step. The resonant melody of the bells seems to orchestrate an exciting prelude to the impending race, setting the atmosphere ablaze with anticipation.

With a sharp whistle from the referee, the race begins. The air is filled with the rush of hooves and the sight of clouds of sand rising in a breathtaking whirlwind. The camels gallop with unmatched speed, their legs moving in a rhythm that echoes the pulse of the desert, their humps undulating like waves on a golden sea.

The Thrill Outside the Track
The excitement is palpable beyond the confines of the racetrack. Off-road vehicles race alongside the camels, creating a dynamic contrast between man and nature. Behind the lenses of cameras, operators capture stunning moments while the crowd erupts with cheers, blending the dust from both vehicles and camels. This fusion creates a mesmerizing spectacle of light, shadow, and sound, weaving together the essence of competition.

As the camels cross the finish line, a wave of exhilaration envelops the arena. The winning camel stands proud, consciously aware of its achievement as the judges drape it with elegant banners and adorn it with flowers. Amidst the cheers, the owner embraces and praises their loyal partner, celebrating their shared journey and victory.

The Swift and Stalwart Dromedaries
Contrary to their leisurely strolls in tourist attractions, camels showcase astonishing speed when racing. Locals disclose the surprising fact that, when motivated, these dromedaries can reach speeds exceeding 60 kilometers per hour—comparable to a mid-speed automobile.

The excitement can be overwhelming for spectators who find it impossible to keep pace on foot. Instead, they hop into their off-road vehicles, mirroring their favorite camels’ strides while fueling the competitive spirit with cheers and encouragement.

The racing camels are predominantly single-humped dromedaries, known for their combination of speed and endurance. The process of selecting contestants is nothing short of an art form—ideal candidates boast slender bones, long limbs, and well-toned muscles. Trainers carefully observe their performances in sandy terrain, assessing flexibility and agility. Training typically begins as early as two years old, focusing on building physical prowess and mental resilience. Maintaining composure under pressure is essential; hence, riders build trust with their camels through countless morning runs together.

Innovations in Racing: Adapting to Change
During the races, the riders—usually children due to their light weight and agility—coax the camels forward, minimizing interference. However, the inclusion of young foreign jockeys has sparked controversy, prompting a shift towards robot riders in recent years. These technological marvels are securely mounted on the camels, controlled remotely to execute commands, while owners manage speed and direction through sophisticated devices.

The Growth of the Racing Industry
Camel racing in Egypt boasts a variety of prestigious events, such as the Ismailia International Camel Festival and the Matrouh-Alamein Camel Race, while neighboring countries host their own competitions like Saudi Arabia’s “Kingdom Cup” and Qatar’s “Camel Festival.” Each event attracts thousands of participants and spectators annually, fostering cultural exchange and providing a boost to the camel economy. This flourishing industry supports every aspect, from selection and training to decoration and races, forming a complete cycle of celebration.

Reflecting on the vibrancy of camel racing in the Ismailia desert, one is reminded of a Bedouin proverb: “Every grain of sand in the desert carries a story of camels.” As modern civilization evolves, camels continue to gallop across the sands, embodying the legacies of ancient cultures while forging new narratives in the tides of time.

Introduction: A Cultural Elixir

Yerba Mate, or “mate,” embodies the very soul of everyday life in Uruguay and Argentina, much like tea in the East and coffee in the West. It is a beverage steeped in cultural significance and tradition, transcending mere consumption to become a cherished ritual. The sight of locals carrying thermoses alongside intricately designed cups with straws reveals a unique relationship with this herbal infusion, where it is not merely “drunk” but “sipped,” an experience highlighting its communal essence.

The Ritual of Sipping: More Than Just a Drink

In the bustling streets, shopping malls, and train stations of Argentina and Uruguay, one might notice people cradling their thermoses, an everyday occurrence that begs a closer look. Accompanying these vessels is a special cup equipped with a straw – the ideal apparatus for enjoying yerba mate. This cherished ritual represents more than just a beverage; it is a cultural practice that fosters connection, conversation, and camaraderie among those who partake in it.

Yerba mate, derived from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree, is much more than a drink; it is a symbol of community and sharing. The leaves, meticulously harvested from the evergreen shrub, are steeped and prepared with hot water, creating a stimulating infusion rich in flavor. Unlike traditional tea, yerba mate offers a distinctive profile, both in taste and cultural significance, marking its place as a staple of South American life.

The Nutritional Benefits: A Hearty Brew

Yerba mate is lauded not only for its rich cultural roots but also for its health benefits. It contains a unique compound known as mateine, which, like caffeine, invigorates the mind and enhances alertness. Richer in antioxidants than red wine, yerba mate boasts polyphenolic compounds believed to possess anti-aging properties. Additionally, its abundance of essential B vitamins contributes to overall well-being, making it a favored choice for those seeking to combat fatigue.

Often, herbal additives are included to enhance its medicinal properties, transforming yerba mate into a therapeutic drink, tailored for various needs. Its versatility and health benefits have solidified mate’s standing as a beverage that transcends generations.

Historical Roots: A Timeless Tradition

The origins of yerba mate can be traced back to the Inca Empire, where indigenous peoples discovered the enchanting properties of the mate tree. They transformed its leaves into a drink that served not only as nourishment but also as a spiritual medium to connect with the divine. As tribes migrated, the consumption of yerba mate spread throughout the Río de la Plata region, becoming embedded in the cultures of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Strikingly, it is now excluded from its ancestral homeland within the Inca territory, as this beverage flourished elsewhere.

The fertile lands of the Río de la Plata provide an ideal environment for cultivating the mate plant, enabling high yields that contribute significantly to South America’s supply. The arrival of Spanish and Portuguese colonizers introduced yerba mate beyond the continent’s borders, allowing its cultural essence to traverse the globe.

A Shared Passion: The Uruguayan and Argentine Connection

Neighboring Uruguay and Argentina share similar culinary traditions, with yerba mate weaving itself into the fabric of daily life. The love for this beverage is a near-obsession, transcending ages and demographics within these nations. It epitomizes social life, serving as a catalyst for community gatherings, celebrations, and a sense of belonging.

In Brazil, yerba mate is also consumed, albeit with less fervor. The Brazilian version, resembling a powder, differs from the leaf-based mate favored in Argentina and Uruguay, though the processing methods remain largely similar. The careful harvesting, drying, sorting, roasting, and grinding culminate in the characteristic green hues of yerba mate leaves.

The Social Fabric: Gathering Over Mate

Yerba mate plays a pivotal role in social interactions, often serving as a focal point during gatherings with friends and family. Whether at festive celebrations, sporting events, or simple moments of respite at work, sharing mate fosters connection among people. This act of passing the gourd around signifies camaraderie, as participants take turns sipping from the same cup, creating an intimate bond.

The traditional mate set consists of a gourd and a metal straw, known as a “bombilla,” equipped with a small filter to prevent leaves from entering the straw. This unique method of consumption transforms how the beverage is experienced, emphasizing its communal aspect. Traditionally crafted from materials such as gourds, bamboo, or hardwood, these vessels are often adorned with intricate designs or finishes, enhancing their aesthetic appeal while preserving cultural heritage.

The Mate Festival: Celebrating a Cultural Legacy

Every year, Argentina celebrates the arrival of the mate harvest with a grand festival akin to Brazil’s Carnival. This vibrant event strengthens social ties and fosters communal interactions, as streets fill with colorful festivities, music, and laughter. A highlight of the festival is the crowning of the “Mate Queen,” an accolade cherished by many young women, symbolizing pride and cultural identity.

Through all these rich traditions and cultural practices, yerba mate remains an enduring symbol of unity, a timeless beverage that continues to connect people across generations.

Conclusion: The Spirit of Community in a Cup

Yerba mate is more than just a drink; it is a vital component of social life in South America, weaving an intricate tapestry of connection, celebration, and culture. As people gather to share this cherished infusion, they engage in a ritual that transcends mere sustenance, embracing a shared identity that unites them in their daily lives. The act of sipping mate encapsulates a profound sense of community, inviting everyone to partake in a time-honored tradition that carries the essence of friendship and togetherness.

Cultural Footprints:

The Beloved Khussa of Pakistani Women
Influenced by Western design philosophies, contemporary apparel often favors minimalism with a penchant for muted colors. Yet, South Asians infuse their daily attire with vivid hues and ornate patterns—a practice extending to their choice of footwear, which becomes part of the region’s resplendent landscape.

A Stitch in Time:

Khussa: The Traditional Footwear of Choice
The favored shoe of Pakistani women is the Khussa, akin to a flat, slip-on shoe similar in shape to a boat shoe. Characterized by its flat, thin sole, the Khussa’s upper part typically features a solid color adorned with traditional patterns embroidered in gold and silver thread. Remarkably, these shoes are not designed with designated left or right fits. Global Times’ special correspondents have observed that although indistinguishable at first, with regular wear, each shoe molds to the contours of the corresponding foot, eventually conforming to left and right.

Khussa shoes are handcrafted using cowhide, a tradition tracing back over 400 years to the Mughal Empire, where nobles embellished their shoes with gemstones and colorful threads. Today, Khussas are economically priced; a pair is accessible in grand bazaars for the equivalent of a few Renminbi. These sturdy shoes can last two to three years of regular wear, are convenient to slip on like slippers, and comfortable for casual strides due to the flat sole design that avoids cramping feet. However, their one shortfall lies in the thin sole, leading to discomfort on uneven, pebbly paths.

The nomenclature of Khussa varies across Indian and Pakistani locales, known variously as Jutti or Mojari. Mojari, however, often refers to men’s footwear characterized by a pointed toe and an open heel, resembling slippers. Detailed illustrations depict Mughal emperors and nobles adorned in elaborate Mojaris. A variant with upturned toes, akin to the Chinese qiaotou shoes, also adorns women.

Steps Through History:

Chappals and Peshawari Sandals
In addition to Khussas, Pakistanis commonly wear slippers, locally termed as Chappal. These leather flip-flops are a common sight, even perceived on the feet of various ancient statues, attesting to their historical lineage.

A unique feature of Pakistani men’s footwear is the “Peshawari Chappal,” a traditional sandal from Peshawar consisting of a leather upper and a rugged rubber sole, offering durability at a modest cost. Suitable for formal and informal occasions alike, these sandals capture the essence of Pakistani aesthetics—valuing appearances without compromising practicality.

Nestled gently within the embrace of the Himalayas, Bhutan moves to a different rhythm, a cadence unique to its topography and traditions. In Thimphu, the capital, the flow of traffic does not depend on the impersonal automation of traffic lights; instead, it relies on the distinctive presence of traffic police officers, who serve as the “signs of passage” at intersections.

Strolling down the main thoroughfares, my eyes are often drawn to the vibrant, locally inspired booths that serve as posts for these officers. These octagonal structures are drenched in bright colors, with pillars, eaves, and interiors adorned with intricate patterns, topped with gleaming gold embellishments that shimmer in the sunlight.

The traffic officers themselves are a captivating sight. Clad in smart uniforms, with white gloves and ceremonial hats, they stand amidst the flow of vehicles, orchestrating the traffic with their hands. Their movements are graceful, almost dance-like—a performance that, as the tourism department explains, may be enhanced by some form of dance training. Under their command, Thimphu’s traffic moves with order and decorum, with drivers patiently waiting their turn, even during peak traffic hours, without the urge to honk.

As a major city in Bhutan, Thimphu experiences a relative surge in traffic, with streets mostly comprising two lanes in each direction. Congestion is common during rush hours. Once, while calling for a ride in the morning, my driver apologized profusely for being late. He explained that the local rush hour typically spans from 8 to 9 a.m., when schools and workplaces begin. After this period, the roads clear up considerably.

The driver further informed me that outside of morning and evening rush hours, the streets are quite fluid, barring accidents or roadworks.

Unlike traffic lights, humans need rest, and Thimphu’s traffic officers do not operate on shift rotations. At a certain time, they depart from their posts, and no one replaces them. I observed that the local officers usually conclude their duties around 6 p.m., leaving the booths unattended thereafter.

However, this does not lead to chaos. Thimphu has a comprehensive set of traffic regulations that are strictly enforced, and drivers have grown accustomed to following rules without police direction. Thus, even after the officers have retired for the day, the traffic continues to flow with relative order.

During my stay, I was pleasantly surprised by the rarity of traffic accidents. This may be attributed to the Bhutanese way of life, which is deeply influenced by Buddhist philosophy. They approach life with patience and tranquility, maintaining a serene demeanor even during busy traffic periods, and willingly yielding to others.

The presence of these booths not only aids in maintaining traffic order but also reflects the Bhutanese value of traditional human warmth. It is reported that although the government initially considered installing traffic lights, many Bhutanese felt that such impersonal devices lacked a human touch, leading the government to continue relying on traffic officers.

Beyond Thimphu, my explorations extended to other towns in Bhutan, none of which featured traffic lights.

The roads connecting these towns are primarily unpaved, and it is not uncommon for cattle to cross. Drivers instinctively slow down to avoid startling them, reflecting the Bhutanese belief that all animals and plants possess a spirit. I have also encountered children from nearby villages crossing the streets, with drivers stopping voluntarily to let them pass. Many of these children, adorned in traditional attire, added a touch of charm to the journey.

In the Turkish lexicon, “Dondurma” directly translates to “freezing,” a fitting moniker for Turkey’s cherished ice cream that has danced its way into the hearts of many. Known in Mandarin as “咚哆玛,” a whimsical onomatopoeia mimicking the sound of the creamy concoction being rhythmically struck during its creation, Dondurma is not your average frozen treat.

The Taffy of Ice Creams

Dondurma boasts a chewy texture that sets it apart from its creamier cousins. If one were to draw parallels in the confectionery world, it would be akin to comparing taffy with soft caramel. Its robust consistency defies the ordinary spoon, making a knife and fork the preferred instruments for indulgence. This elegant mode of consumption adds to the distinctive charm of Turkish ice cream.

For most, the mention of Turkish ice cream conjures images of viral videos, where vendors engage in playful, acrobatic exchanges with eager customers. The vendor, with a smile, teases by presenting a cone only to whisk it away with a metal rod in the blink of an eye. As the customer processes their surprise, the vendor performs a swift sleight of hand, topping the cone with a generous dollop of Dondurma before presenting it again. This playful “tug of war” has contributed to the ice cream’s fame, drawing curious travelers from around the world to experience the “flying ice cream.”

The Secret Behind the Stretch

The secret to Dondurma’s obedient texture, even under the sweltering summer sun, lies in its simple yet unique ingredients: sheep’s milk, sugar, salep (orchid tuber flour), and mastic. Sheep’s milk provides a rich creaminess and inherent “stickiness,” and it’s the exclusive use of pure sheep’s milk that underscores Dondurma’s signature feature.

Salep, the secret weapon of Dondurma, is a flour made from the tubers of wild orchids, endowing the ice cream with a distinctive flavor and the coveted “stretchiness.” These unique orchids primarily grow in Turkey and Iran. Due to its magical thickening properties, salep is highly sought after in Turkish markets, leading to concerns over the overharvesting of wild orchids. To protect this precious plant, the Turkish government has prohibited its export, making the authentic Dondurma experience something best savored on Turkish soil.

The origins of Dondurma are shrouded in tales and anecdotes. One popular story tells of an Ottoman merchant who sold an orchid-flavored beverage made from salep and milk. One day, he buried the leftover drink in the snow to prevent spoilage. Upon retrieving it the next day, he found the beverage had thickened remarkably. Further experimentation revealed that adding milk and sugar to the orchid drink significantly increased its viscosity, allowing it to be stretched like glue. Thus, the delectable Turkish ice cream “Dondurma” was born.

The modern method of crafting Dondurma involves gently heating sweetened sheep’s milk before incorporating salep. This mixture is then hand-stirred with a long metal rod until the desired level of thickness is achieved. Allowed to cool at room temperature before being frozen, this technique ensures Dondurma’s silky texture and memorable elasticity, a treat that is as delightful to play with as it is to eat.

In the tapestry of South Asian festivities, the Mehndi, or Henna as it is commonly known, stands out as a vibrant thread of tradition, weaving patterns of joy and celebration onto the canvas of the skin. The term ‘Henna’ has its roots in the Arabic language, and it is referred to as ‘Mehndi’ in Urdu and Hindi, derived from the Sanskrit ‘Mendhika’, signifying the red dye. A recent experience at a Pakistani friend’s birthday party offered the ‘Global Times’ reporter a firsthand immersion into the art of Mehndi.

The artisan tasked with adorning the hands of the attendees was a young girl from a neighboring village. Despite her youth, her hands moved with the grace and expertise of an old soul. She began by extracting a long, conical tube of Henna paste, akin to a cake decorator’s piping bag, snipping a small opening at its tip, and then gently squeezing out the deep reddish-brown dye. Initially uneven, the dye was smoothed out on a prepared tissue, after which she commenced her creative endeavor on the back of the hand.

Without the need for visible contemplation, the girl drew a line around the wrist, thickening it upon repetition, then proceeded to craft diamond-shaped grids adorned with petite flowers, conjuring a resplendent bracelet. Spiraling flowers trailed across the hand, linked by dotted ‘chains’ to the fingers, which were meticulously decorated with jewel-like patterns, as if adorning each digit with a ring of blossoms and brocades.

As the dye permeated the skin, the reporter described a sensation of coolness and tingling, accompanied by a faint numbness and a distinctive scent reminiscent of the ink used in calligraphy during childhood. After one hand was adorned, it was crucial to avoid contact with the design until the dye set. The other hand was decorated with equal ease and precision, the patterns seemingly etched in the girl’s memory.

With both hands intricately painted, a wait of approximately fifteen minutes ensued before the surface dye could be washed off. Allowing more time would see the dye dry and crack, even peeling off. Once the surface dye was removed, the true beauty of the Mehndi was revealed; the color lightened from its initial near-black redness to a radiant reddish-brown, resembling a layer of exotic red-brown lace over the skin.

The young artisan was reputed to be a master of Mehndi in her village, sought after during festivals and celebrations. She recounted learning the art naturally, having grown up watching her mother, absorbing the skill through observation and practice.

Mehndi is not permanent; it does not hinder daily activities such as washing hands or preparing food. Its color fades over time, typically disappearing after two to three weeks.

The dye is derived from the natural plant Lawsonia inermis, also known as the henna tree, which has been used for over 5,000 years in South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Initially, desert dwellers used the plant dye for its cooling properties, crushing the dry leaves into a paste and soaking their palms and soles, finding relief from the heat. They noticed the patterns left on their skin as the dye faded, and gradually, this practical use evolved into a form of decoration.

Today, Mehndi is an integral part of South Asian culture, especially at weddings and birthdays. A South Asian wedding without Mehndi is deemed incomplete. It is a ritual of blessing among women, where intricate patterns of flowers, vines, and geometrical shapes are drawn on each other’s hands and feet, echoing the designs of their mothers, conveying wishes for health and prosperity.

Paradise Found: The Essence of Fiji
Fiji, a gem in the South Pacific, bathed in crystal-clear waters, adorned with pristine beaches, sparkling waves, and damp, fresh air, is also graced with stunning natural vistas and the warmest of smiles. Climbing the lush islands, a ‘Global Times’ journalist is greeted with the heartening Bula by each jubilant soul encountered, an invitation to share in a cup of Kava—Fiji’s famed national and welcoming beverage.

The Ceremonial Craft: Kava Preparations
The journalist partakes in a traditional Kava welcoming ceremony, a sensory feast and soul-cleansing ritual. The solemnity begins with the tribe’s chief praying in a deep, resonant voice, seemingly in communion with nature, dancing towards the Kava-brewing vessel. Attendants in traditional regalia follow in rhythmic steps with a muslin sack of Kava powder to start the sacred preparation.

Communion with the Earth: The Kava Ceremony
The potency of Kava lies in the root of the Kava pepper plant, a pacifying agent of the pepper family, beloved by Fijians. After a meticulous process of cleaning and drying, the root becomes a fine powder, ready to be transformed into the revered drink. ‘Washing the Kava,’ a patient process of combining the powder with water, produces a milky-white liquid essence. Served in a natural, eco-friendly coconut shell, Kava offers an elemental taste, deep and earthy.

Ritual Sips: Drinking Kava with Etiquette
Partaking in Kava demands decorum. Guests, seated cross-legged in respect, receive a coconut shell cup with both hands. A single clap announces readiness to drink; they then consume the beverage in a single draught, out of deference to their hosts, and three concluding claps to signify gratitude and completion of the rite.

Intoxicating Earth: The Appearance and Aftereffects of Kava
Deceptive in its muddy, muted exterior, the Kava’s initial bitter tang yields swiftly to an aftertaste of cool refreshment. The tingling numbness that follows is testament to its soothing properties. Fijians believe Kava brings pleasure and dispels fatigue.
